Thurber Ghost Town |
Founded in 1888 this city flourished as a coal mining company owned town. It was the first town to be fully unionized and one of the first to be electrified. Brick manufacturing plants were added in 1897.
The mines were closed in 1926, soon followed by the brick manufacturers in 1931. The city was eventually abandoned in 1933.
The restored, century-old St Barbara's Church, nearby cemetery, a furnished miners house and an authentic Bocci ball court offer a glimpse into Thurber's past. Historical markers are placed throughout the town.
