Antifederalists

Search Visit

Originally calling themselves "federalists," the antifederalists changed their name when their main opponents adopted "federalist" to describe themselves in the years after the American Revolution. Antifederalists favored relatively autonomous states, and opposed ratification of the Constitution of the United States in 1787-1788. Although they failed to prevent ratification, their arguments were influential in ensuring the inclusion of the Bill of Rights in the Constitution.
