Burbot
|
|---|
(Lota lota) |
The burbot is a long (averages 15 in.) and slender smooth skinned fish with a flat head that inhabits freshwater lakes and rivers throughout North America. It has a yellow, light brown or tan top and sides, with a thin lace-like pattern of dark brown or black and a pale colored belly. At times adults may be dark brown or black. This fish is very unique by having a short forward dorsal fin paired with a long rearward dorsal fin, long anal fin, nearly equal to the second dorsal fin in length.A burbot is sometimes referred to as a ling or codfish. It inhabits deep cold fresh waters of lakes and rivers throughout continental Eurasia and North America, from the Arctic Ocean to the northern United States. It is the only exclusively freshwater codfish. The burbot inhabits areas with aquatic vegetation, rock piles, submerged logs, and other underwater structures. Because it is a rather reclusive fish, burbots feed primarily at night, eating mostly small fish, aquatic insects and even small rodents. Migration takes place annually in late winter and early spring, after spawning, from lakes to tributary rivers.
