Chesapeake and Ohio Canal

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, also known as the C&O, was intended to connected the Ohio River to the Potomac River. Construction began in 1827 but was curtailed in 1837 and halted in 1850. The canal was used as far as Cumberland until 1924.
