Golden Trout

(Oncorhynchus aguabonita)

The Golden trout is an extremely elusive species of trout. It is a very beautiful golden color, and is hard to mistake for other types of fish. It has a greenish gold back becoming yellow on the sides and divided into two parts by a streak of reddish brown running through about 10 parr marks. The species has black spots, mostly above the lateral line and especially on and near the tail, and white-tipped anal and pelvic fins.

Golden trout are known eating a variety of insects (aquatic and terrestrial), such as the mayfly, nymphs, caddis larva and under-water tiny worm flies.

Golden Trout are rare and elusive, inhabiting some of the most remote lakes and streams in the United States and eastern Asia. This is because it can live in mountain streams that have relatively low oxygen levels than other fish. This trout species has a very limited range, as it's only found throughout the US in high alpine lakes and streams in the Rocky Mountains and the Cascades. Because of this, finding one is a task all its own.
