Kit Fox

(Vulpes Macrotis)

The Kit Fox and the more easterly cousin, the Swift Fox (Vulpes velox), have sometimes been considered a single species. Both of these fox species can run as fast as 24 mph and are sometimes both called the Swift Fox.The kit fox is found mainly in desert plains ranging from Canada, south through the US to Mexico.

The Kit fox is a long-legged, large-eared canine that has a yellowish buff above with white coloring below, light colored feet and dark spots below the eyes. Its tail is black tipped, sometimes with a black spot along the upper base. A fully grown kit fox usually weighs about five pounds and 9 to 12 inches tall.

Kit foxes are mostly nocturnal hunters, spending most of their time underground, rarely showing themselves during daylight hours. Their diet mostly consists of small rodents, birds, insects, grasses and berries. During cold winter months, the kit fox can be found foraging for food beneath the snow.

Kit foxes mate for life, excavating a den or enlarging a marmot or badger den. Offspring are born in a small hole 3 feet underground in bare soil.
