Northern Pike(Esox lucius) |
The Northern Pike is commonly referred to as pike, great northern pike, jack, jackfish and pickerel. It is colored with light spots on a darker backing, the back being a bright green through olive-green to almost brown. Its eyes are a brilliant yellow, located at the upper part of the head. Large pike can reach 4 feet with a slimy, serpentine body and clamp-like jaws with many canine teeth pointing backward. It has a dorsal fin that is directly above the anal fin.
Pike are characterized similar to their cousin the muskellunge. They are primarily a freshwater fish found in clear, warm, slowly meandering rivers and in the warm, weedy bays of lakes. They occur throughout the four western provinces feeding largely on other fish as well as frogs, crayfish, mice, muskrats and ducklings.
The northern pike will spawn in the spring time when the ice begins to thaw. The female will scatter its eggs at random throughout the heavily vegetated floodplains of rivers, marshes and lakes. The eggs hatch 12-14 days later. Northern pike will live anywhere from 10 to 26 years according to the area.
