Paddlefish

(Polyodon spathula)

Paddlefish, (Fishing) image The paddlefish gets its name from its long, flat snout, which looks like a paddle. The mouth is large and toothless, the eyes are small, and the skin is scaleless. Just like sturgeon, the paddlefish has a skeleton that's made completely of cartilage.

This fish normally prefers the deeper waters of large rivers and lakes, but during summer can be found near the surface. However, paddlefish can also be found widespread at variable depths.

The paddlefish's large mouth with fine strains, filters small acuatic organisms (plankton), as well as small crustaceans, algae, ephemerid larvae and mayflies. It will also occasionally feed from the bottom.

Spawning occurs in early spring, where eggs will hatch within 12 to14 days.

Because of this fish's feeding habits, anglers generally have to snag this prehistoric giant. Paddlefish can grow very large, upwards of 7 feet long, with weights reaching as much as 200 pounds.
