Pumpkinseed

(Lepomis gibbosus)

Pumpkinseed, (Fishing) image

The pumpkinseed is in the sunfish family and is similar in appearance to the bluegill, where both species have a blue spot on the ear flap. However, the pumpkinseed is characterized by having an over all orange-like color, with brighter orange at the edge of the ear flap. The average pumpkinseed is about 5 to 6 inches in length, although some may approach 10 inches.

The pumpkinseed prefers weedy, warm water lakes and ponds, using weed patches, docks, and logs for cover, generally staying close to shore. It also inhabits the calm pools of most rivers.

The pumpkinseed spawns from May until well into the summer, nesting in colonies and defending its nests, much as bluegill do. In fact, pumpkinseed sometimes builds nests in bluegill colonies. The pumpkinseed eats aquatic insects and a wide variety of other invertebrates. It uses its specially adapted teeth to feed heavily on snails.
