Robert Fulton was born on November 14, 1765, on a farm near Little Britain in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He learned gunsmithing and was apprencticed to a jeweler in Philadelphia. He became well known as an artist and earned enough money to buy his mother a farm before leaving for England in 1786. He studied painting for a while but gave it up for engineering. Fulton wrote papers on the canal building and tried to raise money for such projects but failed. Later he designed and built a submarine, but could not get governmental support. Finally, in partnershp with Robert Livingston, he designed and built a steamboat, which he named The North River Steamboat. Later known as the Clermont, the boat left .
