The Battle of Shiloh was fought near Pittsburg Landing in Tennesse on April 6 and 7, 1862. A surprise attack by Confederate forces under Johnston and Beauregard caught Ulysses S. Grant
by surprise. Grant's forces took heavy casualties and barely held on until reinforcements arrived. The battle spoiled Grant's plans for a quick victory in the west.
The heavy casualties caused some to call for Grant to be replaced, but President Abraham Lincoln kept him because of his fighting ability.
