White Bass

(Morone chrysops)

White bass are silvery shading from dark-gray or black on the back to white on the belly. Life other true basses, the dorsal fin is clearly double, separated into spiny and soft-rayed portions. Several incomplete stripes run horizontally on each side of the body (similar to a hybrid striper). This bass also has yellow eyes (unlike a striper), primarily silver body with a dark green back and fins.

White bass are native to the central US west of the Appalachian Mountains, including the Great Lakes, as well as many river systems in the Ohio, Texas and Mississippi river valleys. However, many other states have introduced the white bass to their waters.

Adults are usually found in schools, feeding near the surface where fish (gizzard and shad), crustaceans and emerging insects are found in abundance. Schools of white bass are most active in early spring, where spawning generally occurs towards the surface, near running water with a preferably gravel or rock substrate.
