Broken Mammoth Ancient Hunting Site |
The bones of ancient animals at this site were preserved because of unusual soil conditions in the unglaciated central Tanana Valley. Among the bones recovered at this site include bison, elk, wolves, Canada geese, and caribou, as well as the mammoth. Artifacts found at the site include spear point, mammoth ivory points, needles, and more.
The Alaska Museum of Natural History features a reconstruction of the Broken Mammoth site, where hunters stood more than 11,000 years ago.
This site is one of the oldest in Alaska to contain evidence of artifacts directly associated with extinct mammals.
