Denali is the early Indian name for 20,320 foot Mount McKinley, meaning "the great one." The park and preserve covers 9,375 square miles and can be reached from either Anchorage or Fairbanks. It is the north flank of the Alaska Range.
Many glaciers originate on the slopes of the Alaska Range. The primitive terrain offers spectacular views of snowcapped peaks, quiet lakes, multicolored tundra and glaciers. The park is open year round, but mid-May - mid-September is the peak season.
Access if via the Parks Hwy and Denali Hwy, Alaska Railroad and airplane. Park Road is the entrance at Mile 237 Parks Hwy. There is a Visitor Center with complete information at Mile .5 from the junction. For information, write or call NPS.
