U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska Di |
The Corps of Engineers is the branch of the United States Army with responsibility for military engineering. In peacetime, it is engaged in many civil engineering projects, often related to water, such as harbors and dams.
As a result of these projects, the Corps has become one of the country's largest providers of recreation, operating thousands of recreation areas and leasing many others to public agencies at the state and local level, as well as to private concerns as well. It is estimated that one American in ten visits a Corps project annually.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Alaska District was created in 1946 and has several remote office locations throughout the state. The Alaska District is responsible for projects throughout the entire state of Alaska, which comprises 586,000 square miles. The district is the program manager for military, civil works, and environmental work, as well as real estate and clean water regulation activities.
