Hubbard Glacier |
Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent. Tidewater glaciers calve when giant pieces of ice crack off the head of the glacier and fall into the sea. In contrast to most glaciers, Hubbard Glacier has been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska since it was first mapped in 1895. The glacier is 70 miles long and six miles wide.
In 1986, Hubbard Glacier temporarily dammed Russell Fiord, trapping sea mammals, until the ice gave way six months later.
Hubbard Glacier is near Yakutat.
