Kaktovik Alaska |
Kaktovik lies on the northern shore of Barter Island within Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - home of the Porcupine caribou herd. Until the late nineteenth century, the island was a major trade center for the Inupiat and was an important bartering station for Inupiat from Alaska, and Inuit from Canada.
Due to the village's isolation, Kaktovik has maintained its Inupiat Eskimo traditions, including subsistence activities. The village is highly dependent upon caribou.
Air travel provides the only year-round access. The climate is arctic with temperatures often dipping to -50.
