Kenai Fjords National Park |
Kenai Fjords National Park includes nearly 600,000 acres on the southeastern side of the Kenai Peninsula. Access is by the Seward Hwy or Sterling Hwy. Seward is the gateway to the park, whose dominant feature is the 300-square mile Harding Icefield.
The park blankets all but the top of the Kenai Mtns. The coast is a rugged shoreline of glacier-carved fjords. Exit Glacier is the most accessible. Bald eagles, bears, moose, wolverines, marmots, and mountain goats inhabit the area, and thousands of seabirds make their homes in the steep cliffs and rocky shores.
The visitor center in Seward offers exhibits, slide shows, maps, brochures, and information. There is a ranger station at Exit Glacier where park rangers lead nature and glacier hikes during summer months.
