Taylor Hwy

Hwy 5

Taylor Highway, also known as "Top of the World Highway", connects Alaska with the Yukon. The road was officially recognized only recently, in 1998. Taylor Highway is known for its scenic, natural, and historical qualities, as well as its abundant wildlife viewing opportunities.

Taylor Highway connects Tetlin Jct on Alaska Hwy to Eagle on the Yukon River. It is a narrow, winding mountain road 160 miles long with a gravel surface. There is no maintainance on the Taylor Hwy from mid-October to April, when snow closes the road.

It is the shortest drive in the summer to Dawson City from Alaska. This highway also provides access to Fortymile River National Wildlife and Scenic River System, which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management - Alaska.

This area is also home to a large caribou herd. For information, contact Bureau of Land Management - Alaska, 1150 University Ave, Fairbanks AK 99709. Phone 907-474-2350.
