Tenakee Springs Alaska |
Tenakee Springs is located on the east side of Chichagof Island. Originally called Tenakee, the name was altered to Tenakee Springs in 1928. Early prospectors and fishermen came to the site to wait out the winters and enjoy the natural hot springs in Tenakee. In the late 1890s, a large tub and building were constructed to provide a warm bathing place. Several historic buildings still stand.
Today, Tenakee Springs is a predominantly non-Native retirement community. The 108-degree sulfur hot springs are the social focus of the community. Many Juneau and Sitka residents own summer recreational cabins here.
