One of three National Historic Landmarks in Unalaska, Sitka Spruce Plantation dates back to 1804, when the Russians attempted to grow a stand in a treeless area in the Aleutian Islands. The Russians envisioned a future timber supply for fur traders and other settlers.
Today, there are just three surviving original trees.
