Yakutat Alaska

Yakutat is located in Yakutat Borough at the mouth of Yakutat Bay. Yakutat means "the place where the canoes rest." In the 18th and 19th centuries, explorers came to the region, and fur traders became attracted to the region's sea otters. This traditional winter village of the local Tlingit Indian tribe is one of the few ports for vessels along the Gulf of Alaska coast. It is considered a world-class fishing destination for steelhead, as well as king, silver, red and pink salmon. Halibut, crab and black cod are also important commercial fish. For sportfishing information, contact the Alaska Dept of Fish and Game, Sportfishing Division, Box 49, Yakutat 99689 or call 907-784-3222.

The NPS maintains a vistors center and can be reached at Box 137, Yakutat AK 99689. Phone 907-748-3295. USFS has cabins on some rivers; for info call 907-784-3359.
