Texas residents had more babies in 2001 (365,092) than in any other year since births were first recorded there in 1903. The average life expectancy for an infant born in Texas in 2001 was 76.8 years. Planned Parenthood clinics can be found across the state. The Texas Legislature passed a law that requires physicians, midwives, hospitals and birthing centers that provide prenatal care, to give women a list of organizations that offer postpartum counseling and assistance.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the state, followed by cancer, cerebro-vascular disease, accidents and chronic lower respiratory diseases.

Texas ranks second among the states for the number of people without health insurance, and ranks third in total Medicaid spending. There are approximately 1.8 million Texans receiving Medicaid.

Texas Health Resources is one of the largest faith-based, nonprofit health care delivery systems in the U.S., serving more than 5.4 million people living in 29 counties in northcentral Texas. THR has 26 health care sites with 13 acute-care hospitals, 2,400 licensed hospital beds, and employs 16,800 people.

Texas Medical Center in Houston has grown into one of the world's finest medical complexes. The center served 5.1 million patients in 2001 and includes more than 6,100 licensed beds. TMC comprises 42 member institutions, including 13 renowned hospitals, two medical schools, two children's hospitals, a library, air emergency service, an inter-institutional transplant program and more. More heart surgeries are performed at Texas Medical Center than anywhere else in the world. The Methodist Hospital is one of the largest private nonprofit institutions in the U.S., and the largest hospital in TMC.

Texas Children's Hospital, located within Texas Medical Center, is the largest pediatric facility in the nation, providing medical care in more than 40 pediatric subspecialties and serving more than 1.8 million patients annually. The hospital ranks among the top five of its kind in the nation. The hospital also operates the largest emergency center in southcentral Texas. The Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor University jointly operate the Children's Nutrition Research Center, the nation's first, which conducts research on the nutritional needs of pregnant and nursing women, and their children.

North Texas State Hospital is a mental health care facility with two campuses in northern Texas. The facility is the largest state hospital in Texas, providing a variety of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services for youth and adults.

The Texas State Strategic Health Partnership is an alliance of public and private organizations that share accountability and responsibility for creating a healthier Texas.

The Texas Department of Health distributes free loan health and safety-related audiovisuals throughout the state. They may be ordered via telephone or by written request.

The state has more than 165 rural hospitals. The Medicare Act, signed by President George W. Bush in December 2003, directs additional federal funds to those small and rural hospitals, which include increased Medicare reimbursements.
