Amherst

Amherst is located in Amherst County, of which it is the county seat, in the Central Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,039, an increase of 96 since 1990.

It was named for Lord Jeffrey Amherst, commander in the French and Indian War.
