Boyhood Home of Robert E Lee

This elegant mansion was the home of Confederate General Robert E. Lee for most of his boyhood years. Tastefully and artistically furnished with authentic period pieces, this stately Federal town house was the site of frequent visits by George Washington. This is where Lee lived 1812-16 and 1821-25. It is noted for its central hall and stairs and its Adamesque woodwork.

Significant dates in the history of the 1795 house are the focus of celebrations, marked by tours, entertainment and refreshments. These celebrations occur on or about January 19 in memory of Robert E. Lee's birthday and that of his father 'Light Horse' Harry Lee; in mid-July, to commemorate the Fitzhugh-Custis wedding; and during mid-October, in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette's visit. Candlelight tours are held the second weekend in December.

The house closes for private events; call to confirm hours.
