Chesterfield is located in
Chesterfield County, of which it is the county seat, and in the
Central Region of the state. A number of the earliest land grants to English colonists lay along the south side of the
James River and were recorded in Chesterfield's courthouse. Nearby off Hwy 10 (Ironbridge Road) is Henricus Historical Park, the site of the second permanent English settlement in the New World. Built along the
James River, Henricus was established by Sir Thomas Dale in 1611; visitors to the site can view re-enactments of Colonial tasks and a hiking trail with historical markers runs along the river. Chesterfield is located just south of
Richmond and just off Hwy 288;
Pocahontas State Park & Forest and Pocahontas State Forest are nearby. Chesterfield is part of the
Richmond-Petersburg, Virginia metro area.
