Colonial Heights appears to be located within the boundaries of
Chesterfield County, as it may well be geographically, but legally and politely, Colonial Heights is an "Independent City", (Not associated with any county). Colonial Heights is in the
Central Region of the state. Colonial Heights is the site of the Violet Bank Civil War Museum, which occupies the site of Robert E Lee's one-time headquarters there. Civil War weapons and memorabilia, including small arms bullets, cannon balls and flags, are displayed.
On the front lawn of the museum is an enormous 'cucumber tree,' actually a variety of magnolia, which is claimed to be second in size only to one in India. Colonial Heights is located just south of Richmond, on Hwy 144; Lake Chesdin, Pocahontas State Park and Pocahontas State Park & Forest is nearby.
