Fort Ward was one of the forts that formed a defensive ring around Washington during the Civil War. The museum presents changing exhibits about that conflict.

Interpretive programs, an orientation video and lectures are offered throughout the year. Thursdays, June through August at 7:30pm, free concerts are held in the 45-acre park that surrounds the fort. Picnicking is permitted. Park open daily 9am-dusk. Museum open Tuesday through Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday noon-5pm. Closed major holidays.
