Hampton is located in the southeastern area of Virginia known as Hampton Roads and in the Eastern Region of the state. Settled in 1610, Hampton is the oldest continuously English-speaking settlement still in existence in the nation. Fort Monroe and Hampton University, of which Booker T Washington was an alumnus, are located here. North off Hwy 134 is Langley Air Force Base; the NASA Langley Research Center served as the training site for the nation's first seven astronauts. Preserving the city's aviation legacy is the 15-acre Air Power Park, which includes historical exhibits.
