Hampton

Hampton is located in the southeastern area of Virginia known as Hampton Roads and in the Eastern Region of the state. Settled in 1610, Hampton is the oldest continuously English-speaking settlement still in existence in the nation. Fort Monroe and Hampton University, of which Booker T Washington was an alumnus, are located here. North off Hwy 134 is Langley Air Force Base; the NASA Langley Research Center served as the training site for the nation's first seven astronauts. Preserving the city's aviation legacy is the 15-acre Air Power Park, which includes historical exhibits. The Hampton Carousel, an antique carousel with hand-carved horses and chariots operates on Settlers Landing Road. Fishing piers include Buckroe Beach, a bayside vacation area. Hampton is part of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro area.
