James Monroe Museum, Memorial Library

Situated on property that Monroe owned 1786-92 and probably used while practicing law as a young attorney in Fredericksburg. The museum contains what is said to be the largest collection of Monroe-related material in the country, including belongings of President and Mrs. Monroe and Louis XVI furniture they bought in Paris when he was minister to France 1794-97. The collection includes a desk on which the famous Monroe Doctrine was prepared; a library contains books and historical manuscripts; the old-fashioned wall garden contains a bust of Monroe. Open daily 9am-5pm, March-November; otherwise vary.
