Mary Washington House

This house was bought by George Washington in 1772 for his mother, Mary Washington, who lived in the house until her death in 1789. It was from this house that Washington left for his inauguration after having received his mother's blessing. The home contains some of Mrs. Washington's favorite possessions. The old English garden is especially beautiful; some of the old boxwoods Mrs. Washington planted remain, and the same sundial still marks the hours. Open daily 9am-5pm, March-November; 10am-4pm, the rest of the year. Closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and December 24-25 and 31.
