McDowell is located in Highland County between Monterey and Staunton on Hwy 250 in the Central Region of the state. On the eastern edge of McDowell, on Hwy 250, a sign and monument identifies McDowell Battlefield where 'Stonewall' Jackson turned back a Federal attack. At Sitlington's Hill the second battle and first victory of Jackson's Valley Campaign took place. Nearby McDowell Presbyterian Church was used as a hospital during the war; soldiers are buried in the cemetery.
