Reston is located in Fairfax County and in the Eastern Region of the state. When it was built in the early 1960s, Reston was the prototype for planned communities in this country. It was designed to maximize energy efficiency through emphasis on neighborhood convenience, walkways, and bikeways and carefully intergrated development. Terraset, the nation's first earth-sheltered school, is in Reston. Reston is located northwest of Washington D.C. Reston is part of the Washington metro area.
