Tangier Virginia |
Tangier is located in Accomack County in the Chesapeake Bay between Maryland and Virginia across from Pocomoke Sound in the Eastern Region of the state. Discovered and named in 1608 by Captain John Smith, Tangier Island was settled in 1686. Many customs and much of the appearance of an earlier era remain. Natives of the island still speak with a trace of an Elizabethan accent. Until recently it had few visitors because of its inaccessibility; bicycles and motor scooters are popular island transportation. Since the 1800s Tangiers fishermen have supplied the Eastern Shore of Maryland with crabs and oysters; crab farms lie along the island's shore and in open tanks on pilings in the harbor. Duck hunting, fishing and swimming are permitted. Boat trips to the island depart from Onancock and Reedville as well as Crisfield, Maryland.
