Averill

Averill (pop. 7) is located in Essex County on Route 114, near the Great Averill Pond and Small Averill Pond in Vermont's extreme northeast corner.

Although it was one of the earliest grants, Averill was never viably settled. Chartered on June 29, 1762 with an area of 38.37 square miles, Averill was named after one of the grantees, Samuel Averill. A Kent, Connecticut resident, he never intended to settle on his new acquisition. The only dwellings this township ever saw were at its northernmost tip. The population there reached its peak at 48 in 1880.

Averill's post office is located in Norton, over the town line. Other than hunting and lumbering, the only activity today is Quimby Country, a 100-plus-year-old family-owned summer cottage resort on nearby Forest Lake.
