Canaan is located in
Essex County at the junction of Routes 102 and 114 in the state's extreme northeast corner. In fact, Canaan is the most northern and eastern township in Vermont.
Canaan was chartered on February 25, 1782 to a group of men from Connecticut and named after that state's Canaan. During the Great Awakening in the 18th century, many New England towns were given biblical names.
The Canaan Historical Society occupies the second floor of a Greek Revival building constructed in 1846 for a stop on the Franklin, New Hampshire to Montreal stage route.
