Northfield is located in
Washington County, nine miles southwest of
Montpelier along Highway 12 on the banks of the Winooski River.
Norwich University in Northfield was founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge, a former superintendent of West Point, and is considered the country's oldest private military college. It was one of the first universities to institute military programs that later formed the basis for the R.O.T.C (Reserve Officer Training Corps).
Also of interest in the area are five covered bridges, three on Cox Brook Rd., one on Stony Brook Rd. and one on Slaughterhouse Rd.
