The small Green Mountain town of Plymouth was the birthplace of U.S. President Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge was at home on August 3, 1923, when he heard the news of President Warren G. Harding's death. His father, a notary public, administered the presidential oath of office to him in the parlor by the light of a kerosene lamp. Coolidge is buried in the village cemetery.
