Williston (pop. 7,650) is located in Chittenden County on US Highway 2, just north of Interstate 89. It was one of 10 towns granted on the same day to many of the same people, June 7, 1763. Williston was named for Samuel Willis, a well-to-do Long Island Quaker, the first named grantee. The township was the pick of the litter, blessed by numerous acres of accessible, arable land along the Winooski River. Thomas Chittenden, Vermont's first governor and a close friend of Ethan Allen, was Williston's first settler. Today, the town boasts numerous manufacturers, merchants and wholesalers. Williston is one of only two municipalities in Vermont with a local sales tax. Mountain biking, skating and cross-country skiing are popular in the area. Williston is part of the Burlington, Vermont metro area.
