Des Moines is on the eastern shore of Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma. Des Moines was settled in 1867 and named for the Des Moines City Improvement Co. The city prospered as a major sawmill center in the late 1800's.
The 838-slip Des Moines Marina and 670-foot public fishing pier is the focal point of the city. Guest moorage, boat launch facilities and gasoline are also available.

Des Moines is part of the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, WA metro area.
