The Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge is located near Sequim on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The 631 acres of the refuge include Dungeness Spit, Graveyard Spit, and portions of Dungeness Bay and Harbor. Dungeness Spit is 5 1/2 miles long and very narrow, and is one of the longest natural sand spits in the world. Public access to the refuge is by foot or horseback only (check special regulations). Pets are prohibited and camping is available in the adjacent Dungeness Recreation Area. The refuge is open during daylight hours, 7 days a week. The Dungeness NWR provides habitat for many different species including more than 250 species of birds, 41 species of land mammals, and eight species of marine mammals. It provides critical habitat for a number of species, some of them threatened or endangered, and is an important stop for many birds during migration.
