Check out the new mobile version of Online Highways with compact, up-to-the-minute information for Sequim.

The New Dungeness Light Station, built at the end of the Dungeness Spit in 1857, was the first American light to be put into service north of the Columbia River. The 5-1/2 mile long spit, the world's longest, continues to grow 20-30 feet per year. It now extends over 1/2 mile beyond the lighthouse. This product of natural erosion and tidal currents receives millions of migratory waterfowl each season.

The New Dungeness Light Station is one of the oldest lighthouses in the northwest with several of the buildings intact. It has been in continuous operation providing navigational aids since it's completion in 1857.

This popular facility was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

In 1915, the area became a bird sanctuary, and today it is the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge.
