The Kittitas Valley was once a neutral area in which the mutually hostile Wenatchee, Nez Perce and Yakima Indians hunted and fished together in peace.The name of the town came from one of the first settlers, Mary Ellen Stewart. Ellensburg is near Interstate 90 in Kittitas County, east of the summit of the Cascades.
