Fort Okanogan, established in 1811 for the Astor Fur Company, was the first settlement in what is now the State of Washington. It subsequently was purchased by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821.
The Interpretive Center overlooks the site of the original fort on a bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The word "Okanogan" is a derivative of the word the local Indians had for themselves, "Okinakane".
The Washington State Parks system includes more than 125 developed parks and covers about a quarter million acres.
