Founded in 1946, Gig Harbor is located on a small bay across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge
, and is considered one of the most picturesque small cities in America.
The bay was discovered by chance by the 1841 Wilkes expedition who were seeking refuge from a storm. They named the Harbor for their "gig," a type of boat. Gig Harbor still provides shelter - not for explorers, but for commercial fishing boats and pleasure craft. The town offers breathtaking views of Mount Rainier. Gig Harbor is part of the Tacoma, WA metro area.
