This small, 20,000 acre wilderness in the southcentral
Gifford Pinchot National Forest is studded with over 150 small lakes. Straddling the
Washington's Cascade Mountains, it varies in elevation from 3900 to 5500 feet. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail crosses the entire wilderness, with several side trails.
The name comes from the fact that many different Indian tribes gathered here in the past for berry picking, fishing, and hunting, as well as horse-racing in the 2,000-foot-long field called the Indian Racetrack.
