Julia Butler Hansen Nat'l Wildlife Refug
|
|---|
For Columbian White-Tailed Deer |
The 4750-acre refuge consists of dike Columbia River floodplain and undiked islands. The diked lands are grass and croplands interspersed with woodlots. The undiked lands are tidal spruce swamps. The refuge provides critical habitat for the endangered Columbian White-tailed Deer, as well as wintering area for tundra swans, Canada geese, mallards, wigeon, and pintails. Water birds and raptors are common. Salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and trout are all found in the surrounding waters. Deer and elk are easily observed and photographed from the county road which encircles the mainland portion of the refuge. Mornings and evenings are the best times. The refuge is located along the lower Columbia River near Cathlamet.
