San Juan Island National Historic Park

The park commemorates the struggle for possession of the San Juan Islands by British and American settlers - a dispute that culminated in the "Pig War" of 1859. The lone casualty of the war was a stray pig, and in 1872 arbitration sustained the American claim to the San Juan Islands.

The British Camp is 10 miles northwest of Friday Harbor on a cove known as Garrison Bay. The Blockhouse, commissary, hospital and barracks are restored.

The American Camp is on the southeastern tip of the Island, 6 miles from Friday Harbor. East of the Camp is the site of Old San Juan town, destroyed by fire in 1890. The officer's quarters and laundress' quarters have been restored.

The park is an excellent place to hike, picnic, and view wildlife.
