Online Highways Home > Washington > Olympia City Map with Features San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refug The refuge consists of 83 islands in the San Juan Islands archipelago, totaling 454 acres. The islands are divided into four habitat types: reefs, rocks, grassy islands, and forested islands. Most smaller islands are nesting and loafing sites for glaucous-winged gulls, cormorants, pigeon guillemots, tufted puffins, rhinoceros auklets, black oystercatchers, and a variety of shorebirds. Harbor seals haul out on several islands and bald eagles nest as well. Wildlife observation, study, and photography are allowed on Matia and Turn islands. Moorage and camping are allowed on Turn and on a 5-acre designated campground on Matia. All other refuge islands are closed to public access, except observation from boats that must be kept at least 200 yards offshore. Best access to the refuge is by boat from Friday Harbor or Anacortes.
