The area provides habitat for one of the largest wintering Bald Eagle populations in the continental United States. Much of the land is owned and managed by the Nature Conservacy and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and most riverfront property is privately owned.

Up to 350 bald eagles are counted annually in the area.
